Siege of Oudenarde, 16-21 July 1745

Allied garrison at Oudenarde (1,100) was besieged on 16 July by French troops (22 batts, 3 sqns, 33 cannons & 4 mortars) under Lowendal. French opened siege work on the night 18/19 July & made the fortress to capitulate on July 21. The garrison became the prisoners of war & was sent to Tournay.

Siege artillery: 19 24-pdr, 4 12-pdr, 10 8-pdr, 4 mortars.
Allied garrison: major Mackuo (Austrian)

Battalion of Gyusrur Foot (Austrian, 150), battalion of Braun Foot (Dutch, 600), battalion of Beauclerk Foot (English, the 31st Foot, 300), 30 Austrian Hussars, 20 Dutch cannoniers – totaled about 1,100 men.

  1. Very interesting! Hope you'll post also about the sieges of Tournai (more famous for the defeat of the Allied relief army at Fontenoy) and Bergen-op-Zoom.
